What the heck is energy?
For the longest time, I was unsure as to what that even meant -- since energy is such an abstract concept, it was really hard for me to wrap my mind around it all. Since I'm a girl who loves to exist smack-dab in the middle of cold hard facts, things that can't be explained (in some form or another) are very difficult for me to understand.
What I've learned is this -- energy, though crazily abstract, does exist and does carry certain attributes. It exists outside of scientific explanation, but we can instinctively tell when there is positive or negative energy around us whether or not we can fully describe it or not.
I've also learned that positive energy feels amazing -- it feels like all the best pizza in the world, getting out of work at 3:00 on a Friday and the comforting hug you always needed. It literally feels like love, empathy, encouragement.... I could go on and on.
Positive energy is very real and when we recognize and channel it into our everyday lives, we're able to walk in our purpose.
How do we do that though? How can we use our natural positive energy to help us live our purpose?
Say It and Mean It
Positive energy works when we actually believe what we say. One of my favorite quotes by C.S. Lewis is, "We are what we believe we are."
If we halfheartedly believe that we'll be successful, reach our goals or live a different life, we won't accomplish what we set out to do. However, if we truly believe that we can attain our goals then our actions become more intentional leading us to the life we wanted to live.
Unfortunately, we've been unintentionally conditioned through time to focus on our deficits. However, true resilience and grit is built through positive reinforcement. Therefore if we use the our positive energy to affirm our gifts, strengths and abilities we naturally become who we want to be and are able to effectively live our purpose.
Crazy how a little positive energy can help reach our goals.
Practicing gratitude regularly shifts our mindset and helps us focus on our purpose -- it gently acknowledges the things that aren't going so well (that's life), but then naturally pushes us in a positive direction.
When we neglect gratitude, we live in a state of "lack" -- we begin to think and believe that what we currently have isn't good enough, our current situation doesn't make the cut, and more specifically, that we aren't (as we currently are) enough.
This "lack" mindset begins to breed other unhealthy and difficult emotions like shame and guilt. It complete takes away from the positive energy that naturally lives inside of us -- the energy that helps us live our bigger purpose.
Sarah Breathnach says it best: "Whatever we are waiting for - peace of mind, contentment, grace... it will surely come to us, but only when we are ready to receive it with an open and grateful heart."
Want to live your purpose? Want to live your dreams? Channel your positive energy and focus on gratitude.
Make a Vision Board
I used to judge most people who made vision boards - for years, I thought they were a cheesy way for people to express themselves. (Yikes! I'm open for judgement on that one, y'all.) Clearly, I'd never made a vision board and experienced the overall joy that comes from making one.
Using our positive energy to visualize, in both tangible and non-tangible ways, our bigger goals, aspirations and purpose encourages us to take action. It's sort of like when we write something down -- when we put pen to paper, we solidify our task. For some reason, it just makes it more real.
When we can manifest our positive energy in ways that help us take actionable, real-life steps, we're ultimately investing in ourselves. This is an investment of your positive energy that will never be wasted. It's an investment in your purpose.
Be Around Loving and Encouraging People
We are all hard-wired for connection -- it's human nature. We need other people and relationships to survive life and we definitely need them to live a purposeful life, too.
The energy we put out can attract the types of people in our life -- so, if we use our positive energy to establish relationships, we're more than likely going to attract people who empower and encourage our purpose.
For example, if we give empathy regularly to ourselves and others, we're more than likely going to have relationships that are rooted in understanding and love. If we don't provide empathy to others, we're going to surround ourselves with people who may not be kind, loving and gentle... all of which things stifle our growth and keep us away from our purpose.
The loving and encouraging relationships that are rooted in positive energy help us to stay connected with ourselves and our purpose, ultimately allowing us to live an authentic life.
